Offset ink is an ink specifically designed for the offset printing process in lithography. The characteristic of offset printing is that the graphic and textual areas (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) and non graphic and textual areas (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) on the printing plate (PS or CTP) are almost on the same plane. When printing, first wet the non graphic parts with water, then apply ink. The ink only adheres to the graphic parts, and then transfer the graphic parts to the substrate through a rubber blanket cylinder.

Main performance characteristics

Good fluidity and transferability: able to smoothly transfer in complex ink path systems, from the ink hopper to the ink roller, printing plate, rubber blanket, and ultimately evenly transfer to the substrate.



Excellent water resistance/emulsification resistance: This is the key performance that sets offset printing ink apart from other inks. Ink must be able to maintain stability in the presence of dampening solution (water), without excessive emulsification causing problems such as floating, sticking, dull ink color, and poor drying. Good emulsion resistance ensures the stability of the printing process.



Appropriate viscosity and viscoelasticity: Viscosity affects ink separation (from ink roller to printing plate, printing plate to rubber blanket, rubber blanket to substrate) and dot reproduction. High viscosity can easily cause paper to become rough, while low viscosity can lead to ink smudging and dot expansion. Viscoelasticity affects the transmission of ink and the clarity of dot patterns.

Stable coloring power and hue: High color consistency is required between batches, and strong coloring power can reduce usage.



Suitable drying performance: The drying speed should match the printing speed and subsequent processes (such as folding, laminating, and polishing). Too fast is prone to skinning and sticking; Being too slow can easily cause dirt and affect post-processing. UV ink requires instant curing.



Good printing adaptability: including in machine stability (not easily thickened or thinned), dot reproducibility, glossiness, wear resistance, light resistance, chemical resistance (for packaging applications such as oil and alcohol resistance), etc.



Environmental friendliness: increasingly valued, low VOC, plant-based ink, aromatic free ink, UV ink, water-based ink are all development directions under the trend of environmental protection.
